Newsletters…love ’em or hate ’em. I never really thought about them til I heard one of Ariel’s mp3s about them. What would I have to say….again the little voice on the shoulder…who cares what you have to say? Well according to my email list, I have lots to say, and my subscribers like it. I use Reverbnation for my email list and newsletter…sometimes there are issues, like if you’re trying to upload your newsletter text when the internet is busy, at night…but overall it’s a great service and they do stat tracking also for little or no cost.
As with any of my writing, I don’t take my newsletter lightly. Again the advice from Ariel and from Melanie Van Orden’s ebook:Magic Words That Sell More Music, is truly invaluable! Fortunately I had only sent out one or two newsletters before I read it, and when I think about the mistakes I made, I cringe. But, you don’t do better until you know better.
As a matter of fact, I just got a newsletter from a fellow musician that made me instantly delete it I was so pissed off. It went on about how her album sales were down, so people had better start buying it, and basically, that was all it said….very welcoming. I never hear from her (I don’t even know how I got on her list and when I tried to remove myself, she emailed me back and made me feel so guilty, I thought, well, I rarely hear from her, what does it hurt?) Next one gets unsubscribe for sure. I feel guilty because I want to support fellow musicians, but…
I enjoy coming up with new and interesting topics…My last one was about house concerts with the subject line: Would you like Robin Brock in your Living room?
My subject line is very important, and it must be evocative…often it’s a question, like this month’s. Here are a few examples of my newsletter subjects: Advice from my mom and Gene Simmons. 7 Ways Kiss influenced my new CD Monsters.  5 of my favourite artists (other than Kiss) and the f-word.
And my favourite; when I was recovering from my hip replacement surgery, I talked about the few things that helped keep me sane while recovering (yes, I’m too young to have a new hip, but it was to correct a birth deformity) it was called: Does recovery=insanity?
I got lots of replies from that one!
So I start out with a blurb and then I usually give a few review links, or podcast links, and then I give them an incentive…contest, or swag…I love coming up with something different every time! I love my newsletter, and you might too…if you subscribe, you’ll get a FREE mp3 of FUEL, the first UK and European single from my latest CD Monsters.
